Building an AR application used to mean hiring Unity developers, licensing 3D engines, and spending months on custom software. For most hardware companies, that was a non-starter.
I've spent the last year building VisionGuide's web-based workflow editor — the tool that lets service managers create AR-guided procedures without writing code. The goal was simple: if you can use a slide deck builder, you should be able to build an AR app. Here's what we've learned about making that possible.
Why Hardware Companies Need Custom AR Apps
Every hardware company has the same challenge: their products are complex, their support teams are stretched thin, and their customers expect instant help.

How No-Code AR Platforms Work

1. Upload Your Hardware Models

- Step 1: Camera recognizes the device model

This kind of conditional logic would take weeks to implement in custom code — in the editor, it's a drag-and-drop connection between steps.
3. Train the AI Recognition
The platform needs to learn what your hardware looks like from different angles. This typically involves scanning the physical device with a phone camera from various positions — walking around the equipment while the app captures images.
The AI builds a recognition model that can identify the hardware instantly in the field, even under different lighting conditions, with partial obstructions, or from unexpected angles. Training typically takes a few hours and can be done by anyone with a smartphone — no machine learning expertise required.
One challenge we solved early on was handling device variants. A printer manufacturer might have 15 models that look 90% identical but have different internal layouts. The recognition system needs to distinguish between them reliably. Our app team — engineers Siva and Logesh — built the recognition pipeline to handle this, so a single scan session can train the system for an entire product family.
4. Deploy Cross-Platform

- Component identification — the system highlights specific parts and displays specifications, part numbers, and ordering information
- Error detection — flag incorrect actions before damage occurs. This is particularly valuable for expensive equipment where a wiring mistake can cost thousands
- Data capture — record completion times, error rates, and technician notes. This data feeds into operational analytics
